Knowing what's best for your fellow human is the probably the best aspect of humanity. But it's also two other things, a cliché and the hypocrite in mostly all of us.
Receiving critique, guidance or just some wise words from your fellow human is mostly about how you let yourself understand the words that are vibrating in your eardrums.
There may be infinite ways to the road of not understanding while there's probably two or three ways to the garden of understanding. The biggest "wrong" you can do is to think you already know what the person is going to say, and next to that, wonder of in your thoughts while the person is talking. Not only are you not respecting the time and effort this person is giving in to you, but you are also missing out on the chance of maybe learning something new.
But why would you listen when there's no chance this person can teach you something new? it's simple, because you're wrong. That is of course if you were the original creator of this person, which I strongly doubt.
So what is the right way to understand and how do I start understanding? This may come as a shock, but you already know. The only thing you're doing wrong is forgetting to remind yourself some logical facts. You can start by telling yourself "calm down inner voice, life isn't a competition and based on your age and background, you don't know everything. So please, be quite, sit down and for goodness sake, get your feet on the ground and live in the realistic world" or something like that, it all depends on what's blocking knowledge from entering your mind.
