Sweden has a lot more to offer than meatballs, IKEA and Swedish fish. If you are in Gothenburg, do not forget to visit Universeum Science Park.
The biggest science park in Scandinavia. That is what they call Universeum Science Park. Regardless of its size, Universeum offers more than just animals and fish in tanks. In there, monkeys and birds jump, fly and walk around among visitors, and if the animals are in a good mood (or at certain times), visitors may even pet them. (Note: if you are curious to know how it feels to pet a stingray, its skin is soft and slippery). Visitors are not only able to see animals and fish in captivity, but there is also an area where visitors can observe how scientists are researching on e.g. nanotechnology, ecology and environment. (Because I have never been inside the research lab, I cannot tell whether or not the scientists are aware of our presence.) Universeum is mainly focused on ecological research and development of environmentally economical solutions, i.e. a toilet that flushes from the energy from "human waste", a device that was invented and programmed in the Universeum toilet facilities in 2007. Additionally, the third floor is a big playground for families, where the current playground event, TILT!, there are fun brain training games, body and brain coordination games, and games for testing of your reflexes.
Some of the animals and fish in this science center are endangered species and the scientists at Universeum are trying their best to keep them alive. Therefore, every little ticket sold is for ecological research and maintenance of the park (and also, of course, for providing food and health checks for their cute little animals). If you visit Gothenburg, do not forget to pay a visit at Universeum Science Park!
