She Wants Revenge headlining KROQ's Dead Man's Ball at LACMA

Saturday night I had the opportunity to go to KROQ's Dead Man’s Ball. The party was held at LACMA, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and would turn out to be one of the best nights I’ve had since moving here.
My night started with drinks and waiting for something I’ve wanted to do for a couple of years - see She Wants Revenge live!
I discovered their music online through friends in 2008 and have since been in love with their dark sound. The band consists of multi-taskers Justin Warfield on vocals, guitar, keyboard and Adam Bravin on bass guitar, keyboard, guitar and drum machine. They are based in San Fernando Valley and released their debut album She Wants Revenge in 2006. Their second album This Is Forever followed a year later. In 2006 they toured extensively with other greats such as Depeche Mode and Placebo. The band is now out with their third studio album Valleyheart.
It is difficult to describe exactly what genre She Wants Revenge belong to. People have labeled their music indie rock, darkwave and alternative rock. Singer Justin Warfield has at one point called their music ”dark dance” but prefers to just call it ”dark”. Myself, I’d call it electric rock because of its electrical synth elements and the free and rebellious qualities of rock.
So, back to my Saturday night. There I was, a young girl in her best gothic outfit - black lipstick and a long lace dress, excited to hear some good live music. But how did I get to the ball? Well, I saw a message of the band’s on Twitter saying they were headlining KROQ Dead Man’s Ball. I then frantically searched for tickets, but saw they were sold out. So I tweeted them, just to let them know that I hoped to see them live before I go back to Sweden on Christmas. Bravin caught my tweet and got me tickets to their show. I met up with him before the show and what a sweet and humble man! Nothing is better than a band or an artist that appreciates and cares about the people who support them and what they do. I was deeply grateful and touched.
As the show was getting close to starting the crowd gathered around the stage. Since it was the weekend before Halloween and the event being held at LACMA during the Tim Burton exhibition, most people were dressed in their best Tim Burton attire. The show started off with a few words from Warfield thanking KROQ for wanting them to headline and ”play some dark shit”, which got a few chuckles from the audience. The band then started to play and the crowd moved in time. I looked back at the crowd and realized I was on a roof top experiencing something that was like an epic post-future zombie show headlined by She Wants Revenge.
The band played songs from their new album Valleyheart but also graced us with some of their old hits such as "These Things", "Red Flags and Long Nights" and "Tear You Apart" - the last one of which made us all go nuts! One of the new songs that really struck me was the Depeche Mode influenced "Up In Flames", which made everyone there dance. And Warfield, that man has some moves on him! His hip swaying and deep voice definitly made a lot of girls in the audience swoon. The more slow tempo "Little Star" was also a favourite as well as "Must Be The One" and "Take The World".
This band definitly has something special which shines through as they are on stage. The feeling that went through me as I heard their music live is unlike what I’ve felt at other concerts. It was very magical how their music goes through your body and stays there for a long time.
Tomorrow they embark on their month long tour with Peter Murphy and I definitly plan to see them live again when they come back to Los Angeles!
